Unemployment rate down in Q2


The employed population was 92.1 million people in the second quarter, whereas 6.8 million were unemployed
The unemployment rate in Brazil for the second quarter 2014 was 6.8%, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) announced today (Nov. 6). The result is 0.3 percentage points lower than in the previous quarter. Compared to the second quarter of 2013, the rate was down 0.6 percentage points (from 7.4%).
The employed population was 92.1 million people (56.9%) in the second quarter, whereas 6.8 million were unemployed (6.8%). In the first quarter, the figures were 91.2 million people employed (56.7%) and 7 million unemployed (7.1%). In the second quarter of 2013, these populations totaled 90.6 million (56,9%) and 7.3 million (7.4%) respectively.
The figures announced by the IBGE are part of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD). The survey is conducted on an ongoing basis to generate data on the population aged over 14 (the minimum legal age threshold to work), market placement profiles, and demographic information including age, sex, and education level, providing a source for social economic development studies. Every quarter, 211,344 households are surveyed across 3,500 municipalities.
