The 12 oil worker unions that make up the Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) began an open-ended strike at Petrobras on Sunday (Nov. 1st). All of the company's work locations will be affected.
According to Simão Zanardi Filho, chair of the Union of Oil Workers of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro state, and FUP director, the strikers are protesting against Petrobras's asset sales, investment cuts, project suspensions, and oil workers' rights removals.
“The strike was agreed more than 45 days ago. We did try negotiating with Petrobras and the majority shareholder, i.e. the federal government, before stopping work, but our demands were not met,” Zanardi Filho said. He explained the stoppage will be gradual because of the different work shifts at the refineries, platforms, and other work locations of the company. “Then we'll set about negotiating production quotas with Petrobras,” he completed.
In a statement, Petrobras said it is willing to discuss the of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. “Our new 8.11% pay rise proposal strengthens our commitment,” the company said. About the stoppage, Petrobras said it “does not affect production or market delivery.”
