Brazilians' spending abroad down 43.5% over the year in February

In a scenario of national currency depreciation and shrinking incomes, Brazilians' spending on international travel dropped 43.5% in February over the year, according to a report released Wednesday (Mar. 23) by the Central Bank (BC).

Outbound travel expenditure totaled $841 million in February 2016 compared to $1.49 billion in the same month of 2015. According to the Central Bank, this has been the lowest result in seven years.

Conversely, the amount spent by foreign visitors in Brazil rose 14.97% in the same comparison. Inbound traveler spending totaled $599 million last February, up from $521 million in February 2015.

The resulting balance of international travel spending was a $242 million deficit.
