Brazil household consumption up 7.23% in August

The consumption of Brazilian families was up 7.23 percent in August from the same month in 2021, a survey released Thursday (Oct 13) by the country’s supermarket association ABRAS says. For the first eight months this year, consumption grew 2.67 percent against the same time span last year.

According to ABRAS deputy head for Institutional and istrative Affairs Marcio Milan, last month’s growth was driven by welfare benefits granted by the federal government as of August. He also mentioned lower unemployment and inflation, with energy and fuel prices relieved.

Based on the latest figures, the association also revised the estimated growth in household consumption this year—from 2.8 percent to three to 3.3 percent.
