Inspectors from the Ministry of Labor and Employment have stopped works on two grandstands that are being erected in the Arena Corinthians (“Itaquerão”) stadium which will host the opening match of the 2014 World Soccer Cup.

According to a Ministry spokesperson in São Paulo, works on the area have been put on hold until safety nets are provided for workers' protection. The section can seat up to 20,000 people.

Hamilton Fábio da Cruz, an employee at WDS Construções, one of the contractors, died on Saturday (Mar. 29) after falling from an 8-meter height as he laid the flooring for a temporary grandstand in the South Sector of the stadium.

This has been the second accident to take place on the site in four months. In late November, two workers were killed by a crane collapse, prompting authorities to suspend part of the works and impose restrictions on some of the equipment used for the construction.
