Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo said on Thursday (Jun 26) that the amount of money brought over to Brazil this week by a Ghanaian entourage was declared to the Secretariat of the Federal Revenue of Brazil. According to the international press, Ghana’s government has sent $3 million to be divided among their team’s players and staff, who declared they would strike during the World Cup in case they were not paid.

“No tax crime has been committed. The amount came into the country by legal means,” the minister stated. He went on to explain that a solid security scheme was required to escort the money from the airport in Brasília to the hotel where the African squad is lodged, “due to the risks posed.”

“We’ve been informed that no legal proceeding was breached. The amount was declared. Then, we provided protection to the resources so that we didn’t face any unexpected problems,” Cardozo said.
