Rodrigo Janot took office as Brazil's prosecutor-general again today (Sep. 17). He is to serve for another two-year tenure. During a ceremony at the presidential palace, Janot restated his commitment to work for a strong and autonomous Public Prosecution Office.
“The existence of a strong and autonomous Public Prosecution Office is key to enforcing the rights of all institutions,” the prosecutor said, after mentioning the open dialogue with other government agencies as the trademark of his first term of office.
As Prosecutor-General, it was Janot's duty to report deputies and senators to the Supreme Court as part of Operation Car Wash, a probe into crimes against Petrobras. Among those reported is Eduardo Cunha, speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
During Rousseff's speech, the president defended democracy as the boundary for every authority in the country, and said that wrongdoers should be punished, and their right to be heard and defended preserved. The president once again argued for the legitimacy of those elected by vote.
“We all want a country in which the law is the limit. Many of us fought for this exactly when the laws and the rights were taken away. We want a country in which politicians gain power through vote and accept the verdict of the ballot; [a country] in which leaders behave strictly according to their positions, observing moderation; [a country] in which judges can judge freely and unbiasedly, free from pressure of any nature and rid of political or partisan ions, never violating the benefit of assumption of any citizen,” Rousseff said.
Rousseff went on to mention the government's efforts to enhance the law and ensure the freedom of law enforcement agencies, among which the Prosecutor-General's Office. She further said that her government is committed to not colluding with wrongdoers or illicit activities. “Corruption has never been fought as fiercely as it is now. […]We've never used the government's power, either directly or indirectly, to obstruct or hinder investigations which, as our law sets forth, should be carried out with firmness and all the guarantees from all suitable authorities.”
Janot is a Bachelor and Master of Laws. He became prosecutor in 1984. He has been Brazil's Prosecutor-General of the Republic ever since September, 2013.
