Former Mendes Júnior vice-president sentenced to 19 years in jail

Federal Judge Sérgio Moro by the Federal Court in Curitiba sentenced today (Nov. 3) the former vice-president of Mendes Júnior construction firm, Sérgio Cunha Mendes, to 19 years and four months in jail for the crimes of corruption, money laundering and criminal organization. Moro also convicted two other former executives of the contractor.

Mendes was arrested in November last year at the 7th stage of Operation Car Wash, and was serving house arrest since April
In the ruling, the judge explains that Mendes and the other former contractor's executives paid $8.2 million in bribery for the former Petrobras director Paulo Roberto Costa, also convicted for interfering in bidding contracts between the construction firm and the state-owned company for five works projects, including the Abreu e Lima Refinery, in Pernambuco, the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj) and the Paraná Refinery (Repar). Moro also ruled Mendes to repay the amount of money embezzled to Petrobras.
Mendes was arrested in November last year at the 7th stage of Operation Car Wash, and was serving house arrest since April, when the Federal Supreme Court (STF) granted the benefit for him and other executives probed under Operation Car Wash. Due to the Supreme Court sentence, Moro imposed precautionary measures to Mendes, like close confinement during the house arrest, ban on leaving the country, and electronic ankle monitor tagging.
