Start date for airline baggage fees in Brazil still open

Airlines said they were reviewing their internal procedures in order to decide on a suitable date to start charging fees for checked baggage.
Brazilian airlines have not announced when they are going to start charging fees for checked baggage. While details of the fee amounts have been disclosed, airlines heard by Agência Brasil said they were reviewing their internal procedures in order to decide on a suitable date. Last Friday (April 28), Judge Alcides Saldanha Lima from Ceará state overturned an injunction that had put on hold the airlines' permission to charge.
The regulatory change had long been awaited by Brazilian airlines, who claimed it would allow them to charge more competitive air fares. Late in 2016, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the air travel regulator, granted the airlines' demand, allowing them to charge for luggage as of March 14 this year. However, the day before the effective date, Judge José Henrique Prescendo issued an injunction putting the new rules on hold.
