Brazilians form majority of people given Portuguese citizenship in 2016


Brazilians for 31.3% of the total citizenship documents handed out by portuguese authorities, followed by Cape Verde nationals (14.4%) and Ukrainians (12.9%).
Brazilians make up the majority of the people who were granted Portuguese citizenship in 2016. The nationality was given to over 25 thousand people, among them nearly 8 thousand Brazilians.

The figures were released today (Apr. 9) by European Union (EU) statistics agency Eurostat. In 2016, some 995 thousand people received some EU nationality.
Portugal, Italy, and Spain
Of the Brazilians granted some European nationality in 2016, 36.3% were obtained in Portugal, 26% in Italy, and 15.4% in Spain.
When all applications for a EU nationality are counted together, Brazilians rank tenth among nations, with 21,500 requests. Morocco leads the list, with 101,100, followed by Albania (67,500), and India (41,700).
