The United Nations (UN) are starting today the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace, celebrated every year on September 21. UN secretary-general António Guterres said that the date “embodies our shared aspiration to end conflict in all its forms.”
Guterres also sees the date as a way “to safeguard the human rights of all people.” On this day, he says, the UN calls for a 24-hour global ceasefire, in the hopes that, one day, the end of violence may be witnessed by everyone.
In his message, he urged everyone to work “to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, including through the promotion of inclusive societies, access to justice and building able institutions.”
