Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had breakfast on Wednesday (Aug. 12) with leaders from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). The meeting was held at the Palácio do Jaburu, in Brasília—the official residence of vice-President Michel Temer. The event aimed to foster closer ties between the government and party representatives.
Among the participants were Senate President Renan Calheiros (from the state of Alagoas), former President José Sarney, and Senators Romero Jucá (Roraima), Eunício Oliveira (Ceará), and Jader Barbalho (Pará), apart from Tourism Minister Henrique Eduardo Alvez and Minister of Mines and Energy Eduardo Braga.
On the day before, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 5th March of Margaridas, Lula announced he will resume his trips across the country to campaign for the government and the Workers' Party (PT).
“I'd like to say to all of you that five years ago I left the presidency, and some people who meet me complain that I don't talk to the press. That's because it's not the task of a former president to speak; it's the job of the [current] president,” he said. “Now, I'm here minding my own business, but there's always a word of provocation, every single day. There's always something. But I wish to say that now I'm about to set off on my trips across the country.”
