Federal judges speak out for Sérgio Moro
Federal Judges all across the country came out simultaneously on Thursday (Mar. 17) in defense of Judge Sérgio Moro, in charge of the probes under Operation Car Wash, which investigate corruption at Petrobras. According to Brazil's Association of Federal Judges (AJUFE), the protest aimed to Moro's legal autonomy and that of the federal magistrates working in the operation.
The same text was read aloud throughout the country by adherents of the movement. In it, the judges argue that “the construction of a free, just, and united society requires a solid and independent Judiciary branch,” and that it can only be achieved if magistrates are granted “freedom to decide according to their own understanding, with the force the law as their foundation.” They also renewed their commitment to defending and observing the Constitution.
“An independent and fearless court system is the right of every Brazilian citizen and the essence of the rule of law, for which reason we stand beside Federal Judge and all other judges and ministers working on the proceedings of Operation Car Wash,” the text says at the end.
