Rousseff: plea bargain statements by Delcídio irresponsible and untrue

Presidenta Dilma Rousseff
President Dilma Rousseff said Wednesday (May 4) that the statements made by Senator Delcídio do Amaral are “utterly irresponsible and, above all, untrue.”
Rousseff argued the senator “is given to lying, and that was made clear throughout the affair concerning his arrest due to the recordings. I'm sure the opening of the inquiry will only prove that the Senator once again omitted to tell the truth,” Rousseff said.
The president spoke to the press after a ceremony at the Planalto presidential palace, in response to a request by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot, who asked permission from the Supreme Court Tuesday (3) to start a probe against Rousseff, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Attorney-General José Eduardo Cardozo.
The request is based on plea bargain statements by Delcídio, according to which the president and Lula planned to appoint Supreme Court Justice Marcelo Navarro last year in a bid to stop the probes under Operation Car Wash and release construction executives from jail. Cardozo was Justice Minister at the time.
On the allegedly secret nature of the proceedings, Rousseff once again regretted the leak of sensitive information, which she described as a “leak of something that was, to all s, under secrecy—something that was, strangely enough, leaked on the eve of the [impeachment] trial at the Senate. Those who did it have vested and unutterable interests,” she added.
The decision on the opening of the investigations targeting Rousseff, Lula, and Cardozo will be in the hands of Justice Teori Zavascki, rapporteur of the Operation Car Wash proceedings with the Supreme Court. No date has been slated for the ruling.
